New KOM Networks Optiserver® 5.5 support for Solaris™ 8 Operating System extends powerful storage management solution to Solaris users

Ottawa, ON Canada – December 15, 2000

KOM Networks,Inc., today announced that the latest version of their OptiServer® 5.5 has added support to the latest version of Sun Microsystems Solaris TM 8 Operating System. OptiServer® 5.5 is the first optical storage management software that supports the Solaris 8 Operating System and will extend on Solaris' reliable and scalable operating environment by permitting the attachment of optical storage jukeboxes to the network.

OptiServer® 5.5 maximizes network performance and optimizes enterprise storage through seamless integration of optical jukeboxes for magneto-optical (WORM and re-writable) disk drives and media, including 12-inch optical disks. OptiServer® 5.5 supports the latest developments in storage technology such as 14x magneto-optical drives. By employing OptiServer® 5.5 software, enterprises using the Solaris 8 platform are now be able to manage multiple storage devices and media in the same way as standard magnetic hard drives.

"By supporting the latest version of the Solaris Operating System, we are able to help Solaris users attain a new level of data availability and scalability for enterprise storage," said KOM NETWORKS CEO Taher Shaath. "With OptiServer® 5.5, Solaris 8 users are now able to control and manage storage devices and media to improve the efficiency of their overall network by enhancing hardware performance and enabling time-saving operations."

OptiServer® 5.5 technology simplifies system administration and, since it is completely scalable, can resolve data management and storage-related problems for both a single drive system and a complex enterprise. It builds on Solaris' current scalability features by providing administrators with the power to control and manage data from multiple media. OptiServer® 5.5 can solve data storage with seamless integration, and requires only a minimal learning curve for system users, who can continue to operate with familiar interfaces and tools.

The Solaris 8 Operating System is touted as an operating environment for the dot-com age for its availability, scalability and security features. Its platform meets the needs of many businesses from small start-ups to large Fortune 1000 enterprises. With more than 50 leading independent software vendors committed to supporting the Solaris 8 Operating System, their communities of users include emerging businesses, educational users, developers, system administrators, executives and investors.
